SITUATED JUST PAST YZERFONTEIN IS AN IDEAL FAMILY VENUE WHERE DRIVERS CAN HONE THEIR SAND DRIVING SKILLS
15 October 2017
THE PRESENT WINTER RAINS ARE SCULPTURING MANY OF THE OBSTACLES ENSURING ADRENALIN LEVELS TO FLOW MUCH HIGHER THAN NORMAL WHILE GREAT EXITEMENT IS ENJOYED AND THOSE PERFECT ACTION PHOTOS TAKEN.
Swartbergsvlei is situated on the R27 (West Coast Road) only 85km from Cape Town and is a popular destination for any 4x4 and outdoor enthusiast. Cederberg 4x4 has visited this trail numerous times in the past and received very positive feedback regarding the trail and the user friendly lapa where a braai can be enjoyed upon completing the trail. This is a good enough reason for a return visit to Swartbergsvlei.
Arriving at Swartbergsvlei, tyres will be deflated as this is one of the important factors of successful sand driving. Your guide will share many hints and tips regarding sand driving prior to driving the trail as well as throughout the day with regard to improving your sand driving techniques. The Swartbergsvlei 4x4 trail consists mainly of sand tracks with technically challenging donga obstacles that have been sculptured by the present winter rains. Nature is the main creator of the many obstacles en-route, ensuring natural changes throughout the year. The many obstacles will ensure sufficient photo opportunities for the photo capturing enthusiasts. The various obstacles will not only test your sand driving skills but also hone them to perfection for possible future sand driving challenges. Quite a bit of time will be spent at the various obstacles as drivers get to know their vehicles, using different gear ratios and trying different techniques against the elements and sometimes against one another. The main challenge of the day, a sand dune climb, always ensures great fun for driver and good photo opportunities. Tyre pressure, good momentum and engine torque will be the order of the day on this challenge. All this is done in good spirit, with many cheers and smiles from drivers, passengers and onlookers. Enough sand driving challenges will be encountered to satisfy any 4x4 driver, not to mention the beautiful view from the viewpoint overlooking Yzerfontein, sections of the West Coast National Park, the West Coast itself and Table Mountain. This 4x4 trail always ensures many highlights during our visits.
Having completed the 4x4 trail we will enjoy the facilities of the large enclosed, roofed lapa where a communal braai or picnic lunch will be enjoyed. Although the pub in the lapa at Swartbergsvlei is fully licensed, we have arranged that it will be closed on the date of our visit, allowing Cederbergers to bring their own alcoholic beverages and soft drinks at no extra charge. Here is an opportunity to enjoy a fun-filled day with your fellow Cederbergers. Swartbergsvlei is a destination well worth visiting more than once.
