West Coast

The first impression of the West Coast is that time stood still for thousands of years, while the Atlantic Ocean moulds the coast line, piece by piece, every day. The many unspoiled bays and beaches are evidence of how wonderful nature truly is. A very special part of our country well worth visiting.

The rendezvous is at Garries, from where we will visit the small town of Hondeklipbaai and the wreck of the Aristea before we head south to the Spoeg River Caves and our first camp at Boggerolbaai. We spend one night at each camp. Many other interesting places like Koringkorrelbaai, Groen River Mouth, Island Point, Jurg-se-Khaja, Brand-se-Baai, Matesa-se-Bad and Gert du Toit-se-Baai, to mention but a few, will be some of the places we will visit. Special activities for the children will be catered for, giving parents enough time to enjoy the beauty of the area. Make sure your camera is packed as you will experience some of the best sunsets on the West Coast.

WEST COAST ( 7 DAYS)

There is no better way to end the local trips for the year with an extended visit to the West Coast. Seven days and six night to totally unwind and relax.

We spend two nights at each camp, giving people time to enjoy, try their hand at fishing or Cray fishing, relax at the camp or just explore the area, either on foot or by vehicle.

SADDLE HILL (NAMIB DESERT)

Most peoples first reaction is a look of disbelief when you tell them that you are going to the Namib Desert in December/January. What most people don't realize, until you start explaining things, is that Saddle Hill camp is less than one kilometre from the sea. During the summer months a breeze comes from the the cold Atlantic Ocean, bringing with it cool enjoyable weather, with average temperatures in the mid twenties. In fact it can get quiet cool at night and you might even need to wear a warm jacket.

Our rendezvous is always in Luderitz and this will be the fourth year we will be spending New Year in the Namib Desert. I can think of no better and safer place to be than at Saddle Hill. A further bonus is the accommodation that is available. You only need to take your sleeping bag while the staff prepares three meals per day.

The five days activities are made up as follows; one day is required to get to Saddle Hill and one day is required to return to Leverets. One of the three remaining days we will drive north to Spencer Bay, with Mercury Island keeping an ever watchful eye of the beach and the wreck of the Octave, which ran aground through human error. Another wreck, that of the United trader is our next destination. The following day we will drive south, visit a sand-covered mining town, the remains of machinery used in the diamond mining process, continue to Gibraltar, the official border between Spergebied One and Spergebied Two. The last day before our return will be a day of sand boarding for young and old, followed by an optional dune challenge drive.

Each new year we have a fancy dress party celebrating the arrival of the New Year. This trip must be close to, if not tops of your to-visit list.

Trips during the School Holidays in 2010

Cederberg 4x4's longer trips are mostly during the school holidays and they are very family oriented. The children meet new friends and have a great time.

On our week-end or school holiday trips it is always wonderful to see how children are shy at first, but it doesn't take long for them to gell with other children and soon all start having such fun that moms only see them when they're hungry or when it's time to sleep.
