OU TREKPAD 4X4
A WELL DESIGNED TRAIL, SUITED FOR
THE EXPERIENCED AND THE LESS EXPERIENCED
25 FEBRUARY 2012
You don’t want to miss out on this one!
The Ou Trekpad Route has been named after the old ox wagon transport routes that crossed the farm in the previous three centuries. These routes were used for the transport of agricultural products to Cape Town and provisions back to towns like Saldanha, Vredenburg, Darling, Hopefield and farms in the Sandveld region. The nickname “Vaatjie” (Little Barrel) was given to the farm by the transport riders after a previous owner, Pieter Schietekat, sank a wine barrel in a fountain to secure drinking water.
The route is approximately 25kms long and includes several low dunes and river crossings. Time to complete the route varies from 2 to 4 hours and grading varies from 2 to 4, depending on the season. A Lapa with braai facilities is available upon completion of the trail, where either a braai or light picnic lunch can be enjoyed.
The trail is technically not very difficult and consists mostly of sand but will keep you on your toes and very alert, so don’t get caught napping. During the summer months the sand becomes very dry and challenging and tyre pressure, momentum and the right gear selection are the key factors to driving this trail. During the winter months the sand section becomes relatively easy, but the riverbed crossings become wet, very slippery, muddy and sometimes seemingly impossible to cross. These riverbed crossings will probably be dry during our visit but will still assure loads of fun. Remember during the wet winter months tyre pressure, momentum and the correct gear selection is still top priority. Upon completion of the day’s activities we can relax at the lapa, where a braai or picnic lunch can be enjoyed, together with a well deserved frosty.
