Where to Stay
a review
Cederberg 4x4 tries to select safe camp sites where the ablution facilities are adequate and where possible there is a lodge that offers a pub and restuarant.
.. Botswana .. Namibia .. South Africa
as we travel so often, we will be adding to this page every now and again
The Molopo Nature Reserve is not in Botswana but it is where we usually spend a night or two before entering Botswana at the Mokopong Border Post. It is between Vorstershoop and Mokopong. We are usually the only campers in the reserve and this is such a pleasure after the hustle and bustle of the city. The ablutions are large and clean and a "donkey" heats the water. The local workers supply the wood for the "donkey" and they light it for you. They return early next morning to light the donkey's fire again.
Right next to the camp is a water hole, with a lookout, where the large variety of buck and zebras come to drink. Driving around the reserve, you should see many animals.

This is where we rendezvous for our Botswana Trips. A real bush camp with a pub and a restaurant that serves very tasty food. At the restaurant is a waterhole, where buck come to drink and can be viewed while you're dining. There is a small swimming pool. Ablution facilities are fine except that when the camp is full, you have to time your shower very well if you want hot water. Electrical power points and water in the camp. Permanent tents also available.
Drotsky Cabins - Shakawe - on the banks of the Okavango Delta
What a pleasure. Campsites amongst lush vegetation and within walking distance of the wonderful lodge, with a well-stocked bar, overhanging the Okavango Delta. The ablutions at campsite nr. 12 to 16 are better than those at campsites 3 to 5. But in general they are all fine, always hot water. Sites 3 to 5 are close to the lodge but it is a beautiful strole from sites 12 to 16. Electrical Points and water in the camp. Chalets also available.

Kalizo Safari Lodge - Katima Mulilo
Right on the banks of the Zambezi River, stunning. Lovely pub with pool table and darts as well as a restaurant. Ablutions are great but again timing of shower is crucial if you want hot water. Electrical points and water in the camp. Chalets also available.
A total anti-climax. Badly managed. During school holidays the campsite is packed with South African campers. Each large site has it’s own ablution which is great, but a bit of neglect shows. Sewerage tanks overflowed. Lodge not at all inviting.
Thebe Lodge - Kasane
A great setting for the camp site, on the Chobe River with a great pub/restaurant close at hand and lovely ablutions, but apparently they really cater for overlander trucks and the youth then party till late with loud music. If you like that then Thebe lodge is the place for you.
Mankwe Bush Camp - between Chobe & Moremi Game Reserves
A bush camp with a flush toilet and a bucket shower, but no hot water. A fire kettle is a good idea, to heat water for the shower. The lodge and chalets are quite a distance from the camp site, but within easy driving distance. No electrical supply at the camp.
This is a bush camp and the atmosphere, being so close to wild life, makes it all worthwhile.

Planet Baobab - Makgadikgadi Pans - near Gweta, east of Maun
A stunning place with a wonderful pub and restaurant and a beautiful swimming pool. Ablutions are great, with showers large enough for a group shower. Of course the Baobab Trees are quite amazing.
There are also the Bakalanga huts of the Bushmen. These huts are super luxurious with complete ensuite bathrooms and comfortable beds.
Khama Rhino Sanctuary - Serowe
Lovely large campsites under trees. Ablutions have extremely hot water heated by "donkey". Only one person can shower at a time or else there is not enough cold water to cool the shower water. Ablutions are very dark but they have already put electricity into one of the ablution blocks and are going to do the rest. Chalets also available but have not tried them.

Mokolodi Nature Reserve - Gabarone
Just a few kilometres outside Gabarone, this Nature Reserve takes you away from the hustle and bustle of the busy city of Gabarone.
The campsite is very rustic yet has a charm of it's own. We have been lucky to be the only campers in the site but that's because we're usually there during the week.
Water is heated by means of a donkey that you have to light yourself. The shower is very rustic, with the walls being just net and branches, but this is what adds to the charm of the place. The toilet is made of stone and is a tad small; making a tight squeeze for anyone that is on the large side.
There is a lovely lodge with a restuarant and chalets overlooking a water hole.
