Dweza Nature Reserve - Wild Coast
A beautiful lush campsite with 20 stands. The ablutions were being renovated but should be complete by now. A lovely swing bridge leads from the campsite to the ablutions - brings back childhood memories. There are also 5 five-bed, self-catering chalets and three 4-bed chalets. All of these chalets have gas refrigerators and stoves. There are monkeys around that could be a problem, but if they arrive at the camp and see nothing available to eat, they move on.

Anchorage Hotel - Wild Coast
Anchorage is near to "Hole in the Wall", a must see, but we don't camp at "Hole in the Wall" for security reasons. There is a campsite behind the Anchorage Hotel with a security gate and this just gives piece of mind. The ablutions are adequate and the hotel has a bar, restaurant and pool tables. Here the locals will get you fresh Oysters at R20 / dozen and Crayfish at R20 each. What a bargain! For a few Rand extra they will open the oysters for you.
The Pont - Port St John
The Pont Camp Site, located on the corner of the Pondoland Bridge and the main road into Port St Johns from Umtata. The property is bordered by the Umzimvubu River and there are jetty's and a slipways available for the use of guests.
The camping and caravan sites are equipped with electricity, a large communal kitchen, braaing lapa and clean ablution facilities. The Pont also offers quaint self-catering accommodation in the form of our rustic riverside chalets with three en-suite family sized rooms. For larger groups we have Inkwazi, a large family chalet which sleeps 12.

Mount Currie Nature Reserve - Kokstad - in the Sisonke District of KwaZulu-Natal
A campground with ten campsites is serviced by an ablution block with hot and cold water for all basins and showers. The ladies ablution block has a bath. Plug points for electric razors are available. All sites have electrical plug points. Every second site has a tap and a braai (barbecue). A central dishwashing and hand laundry facility is available. Visitors are advised to bring torches and insect repellent. Firewood is sold at the main gate. Tame Zebra roam around the camp site.
The turn off to the reserve is 150 metres outside Kokstad on the Swartberg/Franklin road. District Road D623 becomes a gravel road and leads to the main gate which is 4.5 km's away.

Witsand Nature Reserve - Olifant's Hoek - Northern Cape
Offers you sensual, flowing white dunes - twenty to sixty metres high - surrounded by copper-red Kalahari sand, Acacia woodland and the Langberg Mountain range. Home of the famous ‘Brulsand’ or Roaring Sands of the Kalahari. Under the right conditions, these dunes utter an eerie rumble when disturbed. There's a lovely swimming pool for summer fun.
We usually stop over here for a night or three on our way back from Botswana. I specially enjoyed the tame squirrels that come into the camp, the Genet that visits at night and the buck that roam the area.
Caravan and Camping: Accommodates 60 people on ten sites. Each site is fitted with water, electrical points, and generous fireplaces with a light. The ablution facilities are of the highest quality. Clothing lines and facility for washing dishes. Large thorn trees for shade.
Recommended route from Upington:

• From there another 45km gravel road to Witsand (follow the signs).

Douglas Municipal Camp Site - Northern Cape
What a beautiful site, but oh so neglected. The ablutions were dirty and some of the toilets not working. At night the insects storm the ablution blocks and in the morning thousands of dead insects are everywhere. Such a shame that this stunning camp site is going to wreck and ruin.
The small town of Douglas in the Northern Cape Province is situated on the river Vaal about one hundred kilometres to the west of Kimberley and just upstream from the junction of the Vaal with the Gariep River.

Sterkfontein Dam - Harrismith - Freestate
The nature reserve and dam are approximately 23 km from Harrismith on the R74
Access is from the R74 on the Oliviershoek Pass from KwaZulu-Natal and Harrismith.
From the Bloemfontein and Gauteng (via N1) areas it can be reached from the N5 or the N3 over Villiers and is about a four-hour drive from both areas.
The extended nature conservation area around the dam of Sterkfontein is characterised by rugged mountains, endless expanse and a lot of water. Besides long walks and hikes, it offers water sport and fishing facilities in the dam.
The ablution facilities are excellent, the hot water plentiful and the site is clean and well kept.

Meulspruit Dam Resort - Ficksburg - Freestate
The busy town of Ficksburg is situated on the slopes of the Mpharane Mountain, near the border of South Africa and is considered to be an important gateway into the neighbouring Lesotho.
The Meulspruit Dam Resort is a wonderful site with great ablutions, plenty hot water.

Bushman's Valley Resort - Prince Albert
This camp site is a few kilometers drive into the Swartberg Pass. A stunning setting and great facilities, but, if the wind is blowing, don't go there. We were unfortunate to have wind and rain. Sorry no pics taken in the rain.
Double Drift - Great Fish River Nature Reserve
A stunning site with grass and shade under thorn trees. Unfortunately no ablutions facilities but there is a very usable long-drop toilet. I'm not usually keen to use a long-drop, but these were very clean with no bad smell.
We were warned to look out for rhino and hippos in the river flowing by.
The bonus here was that we did not have to pay anything for the nights stay.
Gonubie Camp Site - East London
A really lovely camp with trees, grass, good ablutions, the river mouth and the ocean.
Forever Resorts - Keurboom River Mouth, Plettenberg Bay ****
Now this was a great discovery, a really top class camp site with amazing facilities and entertainment, highly recommended. Apart from the stunning scenery, the ablutions are really up-market, a laundry with washing machines and tumble dryers. There's grass and trees and a tuck shop. For the active there's tennis, putt-putt, volley ball, trampoline and canoeing.
This is a camp to visit during the week, not in peek season. I can imagine it being quite crowded during the school holidays. A good stop-over on your way further north.
We only paid R50 each for the night as there was a special on for the week-end. Normal rates out of season is R85 pp. There are also lovely chalets.
Jongensfontein - west of Stilbaai
A lovely camp site on the coast and we found a site with dense shrubs that gave total protection from the wind, although we therefor did not have a view of the ocean. We were lucky to find this site with braai facilities as most of the other sites did not have any. Not a problem if you have a portable braai.
The ablutions were adequate and there was water and power at the site.

Rondeberg Camp / Chalets - Bulshoek dam - Clanwilliam
Magic setting at the huge Bulshoek dam. Great for water activities. The campsites each have their own braai,
kitchen and ablutions with shower, flush toilet and hot water. They have now built a room onto each one that can sleep 4, but that is optional. There's also lovely chalets if you don't want to camp.
Some of the campsites have lovely rustic ablutiions made from rock with the showers also wonderully rustic.

Cradock Spa
On our way home from 31° Latitude trip, late at night, we were really in need of a place to camp and ended up at Cradock Spa - what a pleasant surprise. The camp was empty, and that on a long week-end, but apparently it was due to the fact that the spring water is not hot enough and the machine that heats the water is broken. It is a municipal campsite, so I guess that explains it.
Anyway, the camp site was clean, grassed, with trees for shade, clean ablusion block (see photo) and a swimming pool.
For an overnight stop on your way to or from somewhere, it is ideal.
